SAN JUAN COUNTY COMMISSION MEETING March 2, 2009 The regular meeting of the San Juan County Commission was held at 10:00 A.M. in the Commission Room at Monticello, Utah. Present: Bruce Adams, Chairman Kenneth Maryboy, Vice Chairman Lynn Stevens, Commissioner Tammy Gallegos, SJC Administrative Assistant Norman L. Johnson, SJC Clerk/Auditor Dawn Shaw, SCJ Deputy Clerk Attendees: Marilyn Boynton, Scott Burton, Larry Sorrel, Jerry McNeely, Dan Nakai, Shurrell Meyer A motion to approve the minutes of February 17 and February 23, 2009, with corrections, was made by Commissioner Lynn Stevens. Commissioner Kenneth Maryboy seconded the motion. None opposed. Commissioner Bruce Adams declared the motion carried. Tammy Gallegos - SJC Administrative Assistant Tammy reported to Commissioners on 2009 federal appropriations. She states that there will be a $950,000 appropriation for an overlay on N35 from Red Mesa to Montezuma Creek, $380,000 for renovations and up grades at the Fair Grounds, and $381,000 for VMTE. Open Time and Other Business Dan Nakai, SJC Resident, reported to Commissioners that he has been working on getting a Stage Coach Tour for the Valley of the Gods area. He states that he has found an investor and his plans include possibly putting a restaurant, motel and camp ground in the area and asked Commission on how best to proceed. Commissioners state that the BLM owns the land he is wanting to do this on and he needs to contact them, find out if it is even possible and then get the appropriate permits from them. Commissioners say they can write a letter of support however they cannot approve anything. Commissioner Stevens discussed with Commissioners Adams and Maryboy committing up to $125,000 a year for the next four years to the Monticello City Swimming Pool. He states that the money would come from the Secure Rural Schools (SRS) and Community Self-Determination Act funds that will be received by the county. Commissioners report that the money from the SRS fund was not budgeted. A motion to approve the request to commit up $125,000 a year for the next four years was made by Commissioner Lynn Stevens. Commissioner Kenneth Maryboy seconded the motion. None opposed. Commissioner Bruce Adams declared the motion carried. Commissioners asked Norman to draft a letter to State of Utah Division of Finance about SRS funds. Commission Reports Commissioners wanted to remind everyone that there will be no Commission meeting March 9, 2009. Last week Commissioner Stevens attended a four County meeting with Kane, Garfield, San Juan, and Coconino Counties to discuss Lake Powell. He also attended a road meeting in Gallup, NM. Commissioner Stevens plans on going to back up to the legislature this week and then onto Washington, D.C. Commissioner Maryboy attended the Navajo Nation session and the Utah Navajo Committee meetings last week. He plans to go to Washington, D.C. later this week. Commissioner Adams attended legislature last week and gave updates on more budget cuts. He plans to attend legislature this week and head to Washington, D.C. on Saturday. Jerry McNeely updated Commissioners on projects he has been working on. He states that he met with Greg Adams, Evan Lowry, SITLA and AOG to discuss how fast the Spanish Valley area is growing and ways to address road issues. Adjourn 11:17 A.M.
