Rose and Emily were tight and loving sisters when they were kids and their mother Josie drew great comfort from them, especially after their father died. But life got in the way and major things changed for each of them and they grew apart. As a matter of fact, Rose and Emily detested one another and Josie had her own life. Years later Rose and Emily each got calls from an aunt saying that their mother had died. When the attorney in charge of Josie's estate read her will, Rose and Emily were dismayed and angered. In order to obtain their inheritances, they would have to work together to solve a mystery. They both wanted what was theirs but were angry that Josie had meddled in their carefully built bubbles of comfort.

Darcie Chan's novel is the story of how Rose and Emily deal with the challenge handed them in Josie's will as each one returns to Mill River to outsmart, avenge, and undermine one another. Watching from across the street their Aunt Ivy has doubts about the wisdom of Josie's will all the things it has stirred up. The novel was carefully crafted, engaging, and a good read.
