Joy and Stan ran a very successful tennis business. He coached, she tended to the business details, and both were dynamite players. Now Joy and Stan have retired and are at a bit of a loss for what to do with their time. Late one night a young woman pounds on their front door. She is injured, claims her boyfriend abused her, and she has no shoes. Joy and Stan fix her up, feed her, and let her stay with them until she feels better. But something is off and their adult children recognize it right away. Finally Stan has doubts, but Joy thinks they are all jealous. Then Joy disappears. In the weeks that follow first the family and neighbors, then the police try to find her. The young woman is also gone, but no one is very sad about that. Who is right, who is wrong, and why did all this happen? Liane Moriarty's novel is the story of a family's secrets and the police investigation into Joy's sudden disappearance. There are surprises, twists, and tedium but I didn't figure it out ahead of when the author thought I should. Interesting read but I didn't find it very engaging.
