Landfill Lead Operator

General Duties:

Support the Landfill Manager with the daily operations of the San Juan County Landfill. This
includes supervising employees, general operations of the landfill, weighing of vehicles, completion of forms, collection of money, cleanliness of the office and surrounding area.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the supervision of the Landfill Manager and the County Administrator.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
1. Open and close Landfill
2. Weigh trucks
3. Will maintain landfill in clean condition, will provide hand pickup of trash that has blown
from the landfill or truck in and outside of the landfill.
4. Operates specialized equipment such as: scraper, landfill compactor, cat, grader, water
truck and front end loader.
5. Checks and services vehicles for fuel, oil and coolants. Reports problems related to
equipment. Makes emergency repairs in the field and assists in repairs when needed on
equipment.
6. Performs all duties with regard for personal safety, that of other employees and the
general public.
7. Maintain accurate landfill records.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
1. Advanced skill in the operation of three or more pieces of heavy equipment with at least
four (4) years of experience.
2. Must have a Commercial Drivers’ License, classification “A”, which includes the ability
to qualify physically to obtain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate, under requirements of
Subpart E, Section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
3. Must be able to drive for as many as 10 hours while transporting hazardous or non-
hazardous materials in various weather conditions.

Salary depends on experience:  $42,455-$53,069
