Utah Search and Rescue Assistance Card

We've Got You Covered in the Backcountry

Purchasing a Utah Search and Rescue Assistance (USARA) card provides you and your family peace of mind.

When people head into the backcountry, they don't plan on having an accident, getting lost, or suffering from temperature extremes. But when "nature happens," calls for help go out to county search and rescue crews. Some locations see over 100 rescues a year.

In San Juan County, costs for rescue missions can exceed tens of thousands of dollars. Because costs can be so excessive, counties may back-bill rescue victims for the costs of their rescue. These charges can be an unwelcome surprise after the trauma and anxiety of a backcountry incident.

However, while you possess a current USARA card, you will not be billed for the costs of your rescue* incurred by the Search and Rescue team. The USARA card is just another piece of "safety equipment" the prudent person takes into the wild.
