Jail
The San Juan County Jail is in Monticello, UT. It houses an average of 90 inmates. The jail is also a state contract facility for the housing and treatment of sex offender prisoners.
The county jail is usually the first step in the criminal justice process. A person is arrested and brought to jail where they are booked on criminals charges that are pressed against them. The booking process involves obtaining basic information from the arrestee, a photo, and fingerprints. If the person is unable to post bail, then the person will be housed according to jail policies and await the court process. While working through the court process, the person/inmate has the opportunity to make phone calls, write letters, send messages, watch TV, shower, gets three square meals a day, and is checked on regularly by corrections officers.
Inmates have access to the jail's education center to earn a high school diploma and to take continuing education classes. They also serve the community by crocheting hats, scarves, blankets, and stuffed animals that are donated to those in need.
